Caramel Chocolate Brownies (Sweets on Sunday)

Please excuse the photo- these taste way better than they look :)

Caramel Chocolate Brownies

50 caramels (you can find these in some stores by the chocolate chips. I like the Kraft brand
best. Or as one reader said, you can use caramel ice cream topping instead ;))
1 (5 oz) can evaporated milk
1 pkg. German Chocolate cake mix
1/2-3/4 cup margarine, melted (the recipe calls for 3/4 cup but I used 1/2 cup)
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1 cup chocolate chips

In microwave or saucepan, melt caramels and 1/2 cup evaporated milk. Stir constantly so it doesn't burn. If you use the microwave, stop and stir every 30 seconds. In a separate bowl, combine cake mix, margarine, and about 1/3 cup evaporated milk, and nuts(optional). Mix well. Take 1/2 of this mixture and press it into a 9 by 13 pan. Put the other 1/2 in the freezer for a bit. Bake the bottom crust for 8 min. at 350 degrees. Sprinkle choc. chips on top of this when done baking. Pour caramel mixture on top of that. Take the dough out of the freezer, and crumble over the top. Bake 20-25 minutes. Cool before cutting.

I thought these were excellent. I will eat almost anything that combines caramel and chocolate :)

Years ago I made these often but haven't in a long time so thanks! I'll need to revisit this 'old friend' recipe

These are so nummy! I always cheat and just use caramel ice cream topping instead of unwrapping and melting the caramels.
