Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford

In case you haven't been listening to the news and are still dreaming of a mortgage with 0% down....here is a really funny SNL clip. Maybe we all need to wake up a bit and realize how America got into this mess (poor choices on our part in borrowing $ and poor choices on the lenders part for lending it) and because of THIS. (no offense- we are guilty of some debt too- consequently... a) we just rent for now, b) we get our insurance to buy our cars-not really-but we have paid cash for our cars- once due to a wreck c) we haven't gone to Disneyland yet even though I really really really really really want to.... d) we don't live next door to the Jones' so there is no one to keep up with e) I clip coupons and shop sales almost entirely..... so maybe someday all my dreams will come true....maybe if I vote for Pedro.....ha ha ha.. ok that was from Napoleon Dynamite if you didn't know). So what do you do to save money at your house?

I love coupons! I also shop at garage sales and thrift stores for clothes and other treasures. Even if I had a million dollars in the bank I don't know that I would spend it indulgently. Frugality comes from my childhood. And sadly, we've never been to Disneyland, but that is one indulgence I would make. Hopefully we will make it before the magic wears off for my oldest:(

Glad to hear we aren't the only ones who have not indulged in a Disneyland trip. We really really want to-but we will only pay cash. I love Goodwill too! And consignment shops- but my favorite is Clearance at Target- where all our clothing comes from- all of it.

Here is my 2 cents. I think everyone chooses to spend their money they way they want. You either eat it, you wear it, you drive it, you live in it, or you are entertained by it. Something that I might think is a necessity, someone else might think is a indulgence. And visa versa. Money matters are like birth control, it is between you and your husband and only you two know and can do what is best for your family.

I don't do much but lately I am getting very anxious/nervous as I listen to the news. I am wondering how mad it will get.

I think indulgences are like extra lbs. on our bodies- we've lived with them for so long- we don't know what life would be like without them- and they can be really hard to give up- meaning they have turned into necessities. I have been thinking lots about my life and the necessities-that started out as indulgences but are now necessary. I'll save that for another post. :)

Jake and I never buy anything we can't pay for in cash. We budget furiously and always put SOME away, even if it's only $100. We pray about every large purchase--anything that's hundreds of dollars. When we are strapped, we are strict. That's that. We've never had serious financial trouble in our family and have always been able to pay for emergencies in cash. I know we have been blessed, but we have always worked very hard too. There are up and down times in every family, so we try to live accordingly--saving during the up times in expectation of the down.

What we DON'T do so well on in food storage.
